Here in Australia, iFLY Downunder (Sydney) recently hosted the 6th event in the global Handifly Race series — a thrilling showdown where 15 athletes raced against the clock, flying to designated points in the wind tunnel, completing 360deg. spins, and performing dynamic vertical movements.
The event was brought to life by Chris Astill, a passionate flyer who became paralysed in 2022. Chris had flown before his accident but truly found his calling in the sport over the last two years — introducing countless friends to the freedom and thrill of flight.
Chris also teamed up with iFLY Downunder’s All Abilities Ambassador, fellow wheelchair user Greg Pinson, to enter a team in the Australian Open Indoor Skydiving Championships — competing head-to-head with able-bodied teams in a 4-Way Formation Skydiving Blast (rookie) Team. Their team ‘Awe Force One’ included Chris’s partner Jazz and experienced flyer and coach Kate Vaughan. Both Chris and Greg use custom harnesses to support their legs, and iFLY Downunder also offers a loan harness for anyone eager to try the sport for themselves.
Every month, iFLY Gold Coast and iFLY Downunder run a special ‘All Abilities’ event, where people living with disability can fly for just $50 (normally $119 in Sydney and $99 on the Gold Coast).
