Squeaky Beach named the Best Australian Beach of 2024

The official Best Australian Beaches for 2024 have been announced, and this Victorian beach has taken the top spot.

With the weather cooling down, you might think that the season of beach days is over – but according to Parks Victoria, it’s actually the best time to visit Squeaky Beach, recently named the Best Australian Beach of 2024.

Squeaky Beach is the first Victorian beach to claim the coveted Best Australian Beach 2024 title after nudging out The Farm in New South Wales, which finished second, and Australia’s southernmost beach, Cockle Creek in Tasmania, which took out the bronze.

The list of Best Australian Beaches is carefully curated by beach expert, Brad Farmer AM.

“Beaches are much more than just a place to lay a towel and get wet,” he says. “Our coasts have the potential to become this nation’s greatest sustainable resource for generations to come.”

Squeaky Beach is so named for the famous white sand of its shore, with fine rounded grains that “squeak” underfoot.

Accessibility at Squeaky Beach

Squeaky Beach is located on the western side of Wilsons Promontory National Park, north-west of Tidal River. It’s a little off-the-beaten-track, so there are some accessibility challenges to contend with.

This “hidden gem” isn’t so hidden; crowds flock to the beach during summer and on holidays. Parks Victoria recommends visiting outside of peak times if you want a more relaxed experience and easier access to the beach and amenities.

The terrain can be a little rough, so head to the Tidal River Visitors Centre first to borrow a beach wheelchair or all-terrain TrailRider for the day (free to loan). It’s also best to bring some assistance, as you may need a little muscle power navigating the gravel walking trail from the Tidal River campground to Squeaky Beach.

Squeaky Beach is not patrolled, meaning that there won’t be any lifeguards around to assist in an emergency. Given the strong rips and big waves in the area (popular with surfers), it might be best to skip the swim and enjoy the views from shore instead.

There are plenty of options for accessible accommodation surrounding the Tidal River Visitors Centre, including campgrounds and accessible cabins, if you’re looking to stay overnight. There are also accessible public bathrooms, and gear available to loan from the Centre (e.g., commode chair and hoist).
