Travel Insurance – Five Things You Need to Know

Travel insurance is often an after thought when it comes to booking a holiday but it’s an essential part of the booking process. If you are travelling with an existing medical condition it is even more important to ensure you have appropriate cover.

Here’s five things you need to know about travel insurance.

  1. It’s important to get a quote to ensure the travel insurance company will cover any existing medical conditions. Some disabilities or medical conditions may attract an additional premium and some conditions may be excluded from coverage. It’s important to know where you stand and remember you can ask for a review and provide further reports if you are at first denied cover.
  2. Paying for insurance cover at the time of booking your holiday is recommended. If you have to cancel your trip due to illness or unforeseen circumstances you may be able to claim on your policy. This is also advisable for a domestic trip where you are paying for a range of non-refundable activities or travel arrangements.
  3. If you wish to cover your wheelchair, or other mobility equipment, in case of loss or damage, check the luggage limits on the policy. You may need to add additional luggage cover to your policy. If so, you will be asked to prove the value of the equipment by providing a copy of the receipt.
  4. Passengers who are booking a cruise should be aware that for any serious medical intervention you will be evacuated to the next port which can involve significant costs.
  5. For peace-of-mind, choose a travel insurer who has Australian based medical consultants available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. These consultants are able to guide you to the best medical facilities in the country you are visiting, will monitor your situation if critical and organise evacuation if necessary.

We all hope for a carefree holiday and hope we won’t need to claim on our insurance, but if the worst should happen it’s comforting to have it in place.
