West Side Story has an accessible performance

Opera Australia will have a dedicated West Side Story accessible performance on Sydney Harbour with quiet spaces and hearing modifications.

Opera Australia has introduced a dedicated relaxed and accessible performance of West Side Story.

The accessible performance of Haneda Opera’s West Side story on Sydney Harbour will happen on April 17.

OA has worked closely with Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) to create a social story which describes everything from getting to and from the venue, what to expect at the site and then what to expect during the performance (when there will be fireworks or other loud noises). The key is to provide detailed information prior to the performance about what to expect and the nature of the sensory environment so people can be prepared.

The night will be set up as a “relaxed performance”. Travellers can come and go from their seats during the show. Guests with sensory needs can access a designated quiet space to take a break from the show if required. Support will be available in a quiet space for anyone who needs it.

Venue lights will remain at low levels. Some lighting and sound features of the show may be adjusted minimally without significant changes to the production.

Opera Australia will also provide an audio description and captioning on handheld devices for guests with sight and hearing considerations.

If you are travelling with a carer you can use your companion card to make bookings. Opera Australia will also exchange tickets for anyone who has already bought a ticket to the event who wishes to transfer their ticket to the dedicated relaxed performance.
